President Mohamed Nasheed has said that protection of heritage was important for nation building. He made this statement while speaking at the function held last evening to inaugurate the “Kalaafaanu Memorial Project”. He added that understanding, preserving and managing our heritage were essential for our efforts to build our nation.

In his speech, the President spoke on the life of Sultan Kalaafaanu and the historical significance of the manuscripts on Kalaafaanu.

He said during the 400 years since the assassination of Sultan Kalaafaanu, his mausoleum in Hagngnaameedhoo has become a very important part of Maldivian life. He further said that even though three dynasties ruled the Maldives after the Utheemu Dynasty, people’s respect for former kings did not change.

At the function, the President also launched a book on Sultan Kalaafaanu.

Earlier, President Nasheed opened the display of historical manuscripts adjacent to the Kalaafaanu Mosque in Hagngnaameedhoo and presented historical manuscripts to the mosque.

Manuscripts, which dated back to some 400 years were about building and maintaining a mausoleum for Sultan Kalaafaanu in Hagngnaameedhoo.

Speaking at the ceremony held in Hagngnaameedhoo, the President said he was working to return all such historical documents to the islands where they were written about. He further said the objective of this work was to revive the culture and history of the Maldives.

Our culture and heritage has been destroyed, demeaned and wiped out by pseudo-Arab Islamic fanatics in uncouth unwashed Pakistni attire with the help of a Socialist dictator called Maumoon Golhaaboa.
It's about time we claimed our culture back, with a vengeance.
Hell, everything about our culture has been deemed unislamic and for 3 long decades the so called Islmization led to only drug addiction, violence, crime, sexual abuse and corruption, unlike anything we have ever see before....and now they want more of the so called fundamentalism and ignorance. I consider our Leader Mohamed Nasheed a true Maldivian Hero of the First Order.

This is indeed a very good step in preserving our cultural heritage. We should not let our ancestral roots be taken over by foreign influences eventhough we are embracing certain aspects of other cultures. The Persians and the Turks are shining examples of people who preserved their unique cultural heritage and blended it with their adopted religion. This is the example we should follow.Just because we are a small community and maybe even insignificant in the grand scale of things it doesn't mean we have to give up our own identity and take the identity of other more powerful communities. After all our unique language, culture and practices are the very things that makes us who we are...without which we would have no distinct identity of our own at all...We are Maldivians and we should be proud of it in every sense.

Stop blaming 'Islam' or 'Arabisation' for all the ills of the country. Islam or Christianity or any other religion can be used for the wrong reasons to bring all sorts of ills to any nation. Look at the problems Christianity brought to Northern Ireland.

'Culture' is not a static thing that has to be placed in a glass cage. Culture evolves and changes through time. We have been worshipping the Sun, idols, giant phalluses and now Allah! Each of these periods have been constantly influencing our culture and it will keep on doing so.

Ofcourse culture will evolve over time for sure but we should atleast provide some inertia to the motions that are trying to make it disappear into the mists of time. Each time our culture and religion was changed our ancestors showed some resistance.
There is no use in blaming a specific culture or religion for our own shortcomings. So instead of arguing and cursing about these things we should all learn to love and appreciate each other, our culture and our religion.Instead of getting divided over these matters we should strive to be united.

We should be very proud of the Sun Worshipping ancestors from 5000 years ago, and we should be proud of the Budhists 800 years ago. They are our ancestors and our history. How the bloody hell did we end up giving up our script and using an arabic numeral based code which is so difficult to read...hmmmm
