The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) is ready to tackle any situation that the country may be confronted with, affirmed the Vice-Chief of the Defence Force, Brigadier General Farhath Shaheer.
In a media briefing held on Friday, Mr. Shaheer said that terror activities were undertaken very close to the Maldives. He added that MNDF was building their capacity by conducting joint training programs with India, which exposes our forces to dangerous and more complex scenarios. Joint training programs are also being carried out with USA in Laamu Kadhdhoo, he added further.
Brigadier General Zakariyya Mansoor, head of the Maldives Coast Guards, also noted the recent piracy attach on a Chinese cargo vessel in the Indian Ocean. He said that it was crucial to establish aerial surveillance soon to maintain security of the Maldives’ territorial waters. He also pointed out that the recently seized illegal Iranian fishing vessels were captured as a result of tougher surveillance measures now undertaken by the military.
The senior officers of the forces also said that the military is now ready to confront and solve situations such as the guerilla attack of November 3rd, 1988 on their own, without the need for assistance from outside.
Recently, President Mohamed Nasheed has expressed his concern over the increasing involvement of Maldivians in the terrorist activities in Waziristan in Pakistan, affirming that almost 10 Maldivians have now died fighting alongside the Talibans. According to the President, based on the intelligence and reports they receive, many Maldivians are being recruited by the Talibans and several Maldivians are in fact locked up in Pakistani jails for their terrorist activities.
Maldives will not be able to thwart tourism in the region, nevertheless, the military is ready to confront and solve any terrorism activities within the country, affirmed the Vice-Chief of MNDF.

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) strength was then equivalent or even weaker when handful of terrorists strike Maldives in the 80's, now our youth's are trained (high-tech assisted) in the rough mountains are not even match to US forces, what can MNDF do if they strike us for any nasty reason? Nothing! don't try to cover-up to ease the Indian's when, when they know our weakness to the bottom. These are the consequence's of such military deals with India.
MNDF is the most confused organisation, though it has trained and educated staff....MNDF needs serious overhaulling at top level...i doubt farhats say...
re last para - lucky that the maldives won't be able to thwart 'tourism' eh? :)
The MNDF big brass want the government to have a false sense of security and wanted to exaggerate a little bit.
I wonder if they can do anything if:
* If pirates decide to hijack a dozen or more fishing vessels simultaneously.
* If few suicide bombers from among our own Taliban decide to attack the more than one military installations.
* If a passenger plane is hijacked and diverted to a Taliban hub in a neighbouring country.
* Some unruly elements start large scale fires in crowded islands in the country.
* Someone decides to smuggles arms to the country .
* Some hitmen infiltrates the Maldives to assasinate local leaders from different ends of the political spectrum.
Many other terrible scenarios and wonder if MNDF is really ready to tackle all these. If not it is better to keep quiet or issue more humble statements that truly reflect their real capabilities.
Perhaps "Maldives Military is ready to tackle many situations" will be more appropriate because when face with a really challenging situation they will certainly call for outside military help because they may not be trained or equipped to tackle '' any'' situation as they have mentioned in their press briefing.
They will not be able to thwart tourism ??? Oh thank god for that
check that mistake on last paragraph pls
hehehe lol , what a sick joke couldn't prevent three little kids from bombing sultan park ( other 10 architects escaped the country all the way through the immigration ?) And now MNDF is geared up to face whichever brand of terrorist attack! , how on earth do we consider this shit? What has transformed? Still the same wretched and unskilled Airport security officers (airports authority security staffs, they don’t have a clue what they are suppose to do?), and a failed intelligence community! MNDF exclusively can't do anything if you are chatting about modern day terrorism , as for my understanding it should have to be synchronized very well , you must bring police and the immigration and the custom to your level, but unfortunately, SAD BUT TRUE !... 1) police is a disappointment in this nation ( glance at the crime velocity in this tiny country, they are required to do better to acquire the expectations of the Maldivian public and international community ,) ,… 2 ) and immigration … it's healthier not to converse concerning them, most of the deportees are inside the country .. ( but they will come with some justification… )…. 3) and the last not the least Customs.. Can’t bring to an end one drug trafficker prior to entering to the country, .. Please it’s been thirty years the same shit security ( no preventive security , all they do is when somewhat occurs they go off and inspect, in modern terrorism you have to arrange ambulance collect dead bodies and media to report , no need of MNDF or Police if you can’t prevent it ) in this country it’s culture that we as Maldivians we always tries to defend the organization rather than taking the responsibility, even when we know it’s the same situation still after the sultan park bombing, loosely organized security agencies during muamoons idiotic dictatorship ( maumoonism is all about divide and rule ), all the organization are always pointing finger each other, , should do some coordinated effort to tackle these menace … or else there won’t be anybody to give interviews latter on … be serious imminent and inevitable threat ( that’s what understood when I heard the speech of president nasheed) , for GOD sake, this is our country !
“raees nasheed vidhaalhu vihen mikahala kanthah thah foruvaa foruvaa migaumu halaaku mivanee , drug masalaeh nethey kureega kiya kiya thibee dhen aasah athah goveema rehabeh hedhee , dhen maumoon hehdhi hen raees nasheed hahdhaafa varah rangalhu vaaneye kiyaa thi nahdhavaashey ( but I don’t think president nasheed is a fool like maumoon ”
( an expert in counter terrorism Counter-Terrorism and Intelligence )
The immeadiate threat to the nation is from the Rottweiler.
in theory, if you keep on saying you can't be defeated. I can tell you, soon you will be.
So, my suggestion is to keep it cool.
I wish people who post here know something of the military at least. This is not the MNDF of the 1988 when they havd three trained people in the NSS. A lot of the current MNDF has been trained by the Sri Lankan SF, The Marine Corp, the US SF, to name a few organisations. These so called youths trained in the high mountains are not familiar or trained in urban warefare. The MNDF is not going to fight in the mountains of Waziristan. They will be fighting in their own backyard defending their own country and people.
People said that the LTTE could not be defeated yet the Sri Lankan military did it. The fighting in Afghanistan is not over not because of the military strengths of the Taliban but because of the political unstability there.
Common definitions of terrorism refer only to those violent acts which are intended to create fear (terror), are perpetrated for an ideological goal (as opposed to a lone attack), and deliberately target or disregard the safety of non-combatants.
if this is the case the local drug addicts and pattays also fits into this category. who is doing something about them, or they are protected under "Human Rights".
Where is Moosa Jaleel these days? on military training?
Anti-democracy hate mongers make fun of our own boys and girls in uniform. Amazing how unpatriotic these m@#%%f%@@@ are!
Your pact with Dictators and Extremists was pretty obvious throughout....and you have managed to veil 80% of women in this country and now you are quitely doing your Jariya slave girl thing and you have managed to make it impossible for a woman to be the President of this country!!!
It's amazing how much you have managed to do....and now you have squashed freedom of expression by continuing to criminalize "defamation" and yet you whine about human rights and love to make fun of our brave boys and girls in uniform. What a shame!
in 1988 when terrorist attack only few polismen fighting.all other run away .in that time army was under UK military instructor and number of soldiers in Maldivian army was much more than number of terrorist.but where they all was?only because of India military Maldives was survived.question is not in number of soldiers but in readiness to die for a country/at present time situation it is same.MNDF have nice modern weapon but who will be redy to sacrifice life for country?war it is not a computer game.
Boys in uniform seem to be acting like puppets. When Nasheed says terrorism they come out and say they are ready for any eventauality. When Nasheed says investitage November 3rd incident the boys in uniform rush to investigat the incident. The same boys in uniform have been there in top positions of MNDF for the past 20 years and didnt bother to investigate the incident. Dont try to fool us please.
- Few "Parteys" in the country is powered to kill who ever they wish at any time and any place they wish. The police in Maldives is same as news reporters. As soon as the "Parteys" kill who ever they wish, our "hivvarugadha police" will go and take the report to fool the Maldivians. This "hivvarugadha police" would be even so afraid to look at these tugs. What a joke MNFD is talking about?!!!
- Our money is being wasted to feed the MNFD and Police people. It seems they are even weaker than few "parteys' in the country to restore law and order in the country. Therefore, it is better for MNFD to keep their mouth shut and sleep tightly and hand over their job to "Parteys", so they would restore the law and order in the country much better than you guys.
Enemies of our religoin has unleashed this mad Rottweiler on us Maldivians. Its the duty of MNDF to contain the rabid.Love ur country.Love Islam.
Ofcourse we Love our men and women in uniform, but when the top commanders (Im not talking about the political appointee Ameen Faisal) start licking Presidents ass, then they are not worth of their uniform. It disgusting, they should be ashamed.
Hang about. Who is licking whose ass? These are the same people who were there when Gayoom was there. At least they were proffessional enough not to try and bring a coup. Do you know that in 1988 there were only three men who were trained in the NSS and all of them were only made nco rank.
To give credit to Gayoom he did train the NSS and later the MNDF to a high standard later on. To anyone who even has a basic knowledge of the military would realise that the MNDF of today and for that matter the past three years at least is not the NSS of yester years.
I believe that the MNDF and The coastguard
has been overhauled and is better then ever!!!
I believe that the soldiers of Maldives are now responsible then ever and know their place.
Not Cops but are the National Defense Force.
I believe when the time comes they would face it .not like the olden days when some dude in a top brass uniform who gave himself a lot of stuff to decorate his own uniform bit like IDI AMIN.
I believe these people are well disciplined and would kick Ass when they are called to their duty
