Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was taken in to police headquarters for questioning relating to a refusal to accept a summons to present himself to police.
Cell-phone networks jammed and traffic became pulpably heavy in Male' through the course of the Monday evening as rumours circulated through the city of an impending arrest of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
An estimated thousand people, shouting demands for President Nasheed to resign, gathered outside Alivaage, Gayoom's residence, after an ultimatum was issued by police for the former president present himself to police headquarters or face arrest.
On Sunday evening Gayoom's lawyers announced that the former President would refuse to acknowledge the legitimacy of the President's Commission in accepting a chit from police summoning Gayoom for questioning. His lawyers presented themselves to police headquarters this evening at 6pm, but police insisted that the former president honour their summons or face arrest.
A lone police officer entered Alivaage to issue the immediate summons at approximately 7:15pm, Monday.
This was followed by reports that the family had indicated that Gayoom would go to the police station peacefully. But nearly an hour elapsed before Gayoom was sighted.
During this time a large contingent of riot police attempted to clear the crowd, but were initially unable to do so. Clashes ensued and police warned the crowd that they would not be responsible if matters escalated.
Police used tear gas to disperse protesters. At least two female supporters of the ex-President fainted and had to been removed from the scene. Police spokesperson, Sargeant Ahmed Shiyam confirmed that two policemen were injured in the commotion.
Gayoom accompanied by his two sons, Farish Maumoon and Mohamed Gassan Maumoon, travelled to police headquarters under a heavy police escort at approximately 8:15pm. A contingent of body guards ran the distance from Alivaage to the foreshore next to Gayoom's private vehicle.
Police had cordoned off the entire block surrounding police headquarters and the public were not allowed witin 100 feet of the premises. At least 50 riot policemen were visible on Republic Square, adjacent to the building, while supporters of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had gathered near Chandanee Magu.
Gayoom emerged from questioning after approximately an hour and half, appearing relaxed as he smiled at police officers. The former President declined to comment on his interaction with the police, and his lawyer, Abbas Shareef, asserted that they would not comment on an ongoing investigation.

I wonder what anni is hiding. I mean , why does he need to distract people of maldives with events such as this. Could it be his drinking problem? or something more sinister? An old man, who has ruled the country for 30 years, is taken to police by this government that has gone out of control. The chief judge of criminal court is right, "government is acting like a man on death bed". I must admit I felt sorry for the old man once I saw him getting into the car to go to the police station, remembering history and what had happened to ex-president Ameen, but this feeling dissipated soon enough as soon as I heard the zaeem songs being sung on his way back to Alivaage.

Anni, the police, defence, and anyone else involved in yesterday's operations should be congratulated for handling the whole process in such a dignified manner. Why is Maumoon above the law?
Just because he's got money to spend on lawyers does not mean that he should be exempt from anything.
I could imagine if someone sent me an order to attend any commission I'd have no choice but to go there. I haven't got money or power to tell the police that they can't touch me. Why should anyone else?
If Maumoon has got nothing to hide why should he hesitate to go there? Even if he believes that it's a corrupt commission. The truth of the matter is we all know that dodgy stuff went on during the 30 years of his rule and he needs to provide an answer to it all.
I agree that we should respect him, just as we respect any other human being. But did the police humiliate him yesterday? I don't think so. The result yesterday was only due to his defiance and arrogance.

2. Remember when you sent the police forces in the middle of the night to the homes and abducted people who turned against your rule?

These are just few things we saw during your rule. If you have done any wrongdoings during your presidency, you must be brought to justice.
Even if the State does not prosecute you, there are people whose very basic rights were violated, will file cases in courts.
You did all those unjust and indescribable punishments to your political opponents in broad day light.
No wonder, Allah Almighty will show you everything. These are just prayers of those who suffered and who were killed during your term.
Even we Maldivians forgave you, but you never stopped vying for power and sabotage the Government.

Maumoon’s promise that the Government will face “bitter consequences” for arresting him made my heart burn with sorrow and rage for all of Maumoon’s victims who continue to suffer the “bitter consequences” of Maumoon’s narcissistic self worship.
For example, I was speaking to a woman who, when she was only nine, was violently woken up by Maumoon’s NSS who blasted into her bedroom at 5 in the morning looking for her Grandfather. She continues to suffer from severe anxiety as a direct consequence of that event. Her story is one of many thousands of tragic cases of Maldivians whose lives were ruined as children due to Maumoon’s cruel power trips. Have some mercy for the suffering of your victims, Maumoon. We all know what bitterness you are capable of causing, but if you want to die knowing you have done the right thing by your maker and by humanity, what about cultivating some mercy and compassion for once in your life. Your use of the words ‘bitter consequences’ was received by thousands like a dagger to the heart. You so viciously reminded all of your victims of the pain you put them through.
The way you had been treated was so kind, you can’t compare the way you treated your victims to that. I mean, first, you were told you would be arrested hours in advance; it was not whilst you were asleep at some hideous hour, and you even admitted yourself you were treated humanely. It is about time you began to express some gratitude for the merciful way you are being treated by His Excellency’s Government. After the severe trauma you had put His Excellency through during his life, you need to weep at his feet for a month begging forgiveness and gratitude for his soft approach with you. For example, he was not there to see his own daughters being born, have you ever apologized to Madame Laila and President Nasheed for the hell you put them through? Do you have any idea how much pain you have caused and how sorry you need to be?
You claim to be a great Muslim scholar, but a true Muslim leader is called to embrace suffering for others, (In Sahih Muslim a Muslim leader is called to be a shield for his people) not to impose suffering on others.
The Islam that I feel shreds my heart with painful mercy for the oppressed; it causes me to tremble with indignation when I see any exploitation or abuse of power. Obviously for you, your Islam makes you feel happy to see your own people suffer, you seem to love to abuse power.
I say, throw the book at Maumoon. Show him justice until he is sorry for what he had done and just steps aside from politics. If you wanted to stop hurting your people, Maumoon, you would just leave politics alone and go back into Islamic scholarship. If you were caring, you would know that you are only hurting the people that you claim to love by remaining in politics. To me, this demonstrates you are not caring at all.
Really, I just wanted to write this letter to comfort all those whom Maumoon’s words hurt so deeply. Why are they trying to mislead our innocent people to portray Gayoom as a national hero who had brought unparrelel development and livelihood to the people. Why are our people beleiving they are living and fed because of Gayoom. The truth is, if Gayooms government had spent a share of their income and if e was an honest leader, our people would long have enjoyed a better life with a home for every family, jobs and other gainful occupations, better education and health, justice and law and order in our society which is now plagued with record high incidents of drug abuse, crime and social disintegration.

What I feel is its not Maumoon that will decide the legitimacy of the presdential commision or its order. His duty at the time was to obey the order. The whole thing wouldn’t have become so violent at the first place if he had agreed to the summon of the commision and later file his doubts as a court case in the court. Perhaps he may have got a court ruling like yamin got.
Unfortunately even the wise old man did make the wrong move of challenging an order issued by a commision made under law. That is a fact even the members of DRP must accept. Maldivians must thank and support President Nasheed for efforts to bring justice and accountability to our country. Our people must know how much of our wealth has been stolen during the past 30 years. It is not a personal vengeance against former President and his Government. It is a right of the people and responsibility of the President to investigate the cases of embezzelement and curruption of the former Government. It appears to me that this fellow thinks and behave like he is above everything - even above god. If he did not do any wrong thing - there would nothing hinder him to go to the police, to the commission to help to clear all unanswered questions. He would even do everything on his own initiative to clear his name. He would encourage all his former cronies and friends to support the new and democratic government. Is he doing that? As we all know - not at all.
