President’s Weekly Radio Message: Detoxification centre to be opened soon

Anni250609 A detoxification centre to be opened, says President Nasheed. President Nasheed confident of greater prosperity, development, and happiness for Maldivians

President Mohamed Nasheed has said that a detoxification centre to treat drug addicts will be opened in the Maldives soon. The President made this statement in his radio address to the nation which was broadcast on the Voice of Maldives 7.15  on Friday morning. The centre is expected to be established next month.

As Friday was the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the President’s radio address was centred on the drug issue faced by the country.

The President said that successfully rehabilitating drug addicts required detoxification and therefore the government attached a high priority to opening a detoxification centre.

The day is also marked the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture.

The President said, in the Maldives, drug abuse and inhuman torture by the government authorities in the past were linked. He said that youngsters convicted of drug abuse had in the past been subjected to torture, which, he said, had not resolved the issue of drug abuse.

Underlying that there were several issues faced by the health care providers in the Maldives, the President said the government was addressing those issues. He said the services available at the hospitals and other centres would see significant improvement within the next three months.

On the foreign currency shortage, the President attributed the problem to the reduction in tourist arrivals due to the global economic recession.

He said providing letters of credit to importers of basic food items and other necessary commodities would ease the problem.

He also said the government was in discussion with several banks to tackle the problem.

In his radio address, the President also discussed the judiciary. Underlying the existing shortcomings in the judiciary, the President noted the importance of strengthening the judiciary for good governance.

The President concluded the radio address by saying that he was confident that the Maldives would see greater prosperity, development and happiness for the people.

All good ideas with no timeline. Anni must now become a CEO and not a President who creates these wonderful ideas. Dr. Waheed is also no manager. He needs to appoint a czar to improve drug related issues, strengthen the judiciary and other grand ideas of his govt. We are confident that he has the best of ideas, but need people to implement them.

making a detox house by itself will not solve the drug problem. And people need to stop looking at the government to solve the drug problem, which has probably found its way into each and every family in Maldives. If not in the immediate family then in the cousins, uncles and aunts.

We have to stop seeing drug abusers as victims. They are not. They chose to go down that road. But we cannot abandon them either. A lot of families disown their kids when they fall into drugs and want nothing to do with them when they most need their family's support and help. Other families keep living in a state of denial and never want to admit the problem. They keep lying and defending the kids who relapse. This is the time when the users need their family to be strong and to do THE RIGHT THING.

We as a nation have to take greater responsibility if we are to solve this problem.

Rehabilitation, detoxification, halfway houses, community support, family support all need to be in place and work together to overcome the problem. Police, Customs and other gov agencies need to work together to close the doors on drugs, but it has to come in a timely fashion. Insha Allah, together we can overcome it.

having detoxification center will not help unless until the community accept those victims who comes back after rehabilitation. The main concern now is there are lots of youth who get rehabilitated and come back to re-build their life and their career, however they are been refused.. Now to get a job it requires a police report. Criminal records are valid for 5 years. Lots of talents are been rejected from employment due to criminal record. IS THIS FAIR??? CANT WE GIVE THEM OPPORTUNITY TO RE-BUILD THEIR LIFE? TO BECOME SOMETHING IN LIFE.
this is a serious concern and the government needs to emphasize on this.
Employment Act, does not say not to employ anyone with a criminal record, neither to employ people with criminal records...
WE CAN NOT CONSIDER ANYONE AS CRIMINAL BASED ON PAST....
PLEASE PLEASE LETS RAISE OUR VOICES
