Helping the new government deliver its pledges

The first ever democratic government of the Maldives has now been in power for just under 5 months and according to most, they are doing a good job thus far.

Of course, it is impossible for any government to please every single person living in the country but given the strains of a falling world economy and inheriting of a failed corrupt system, the new government led by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is performing diligently, to say the least.

In this new era of democracy, people’s expectations are high. The leading party, MDP, has promised sweeping changes to the system and delivery of better public services, more accountability and a fairer society. However, in order for the government to deliver its pledges, it must obtain a majority in the next parliament, the first ever democratically elected house of parliament in the country.

Opposition party led by former dictator Gayyoom is urging the public to give them a majority in the parliament saying that the country’s interests depend on that. However, what the general public needs to know is that it is the same group that brought our country to its knees because of endemic corruption and injustices of more than 3 decades of iron-fist rule.

We have seen in other presidential systems the difficulties that arise when the President’s party does not have a clear majority in the parliament. Naturally, all opposition parties aim to replace the incumbent government and hold them to account but in the case of the Maldives, the main opposition party is a party led by a ruthless dictator and his family members, which basically disqualifies them from being credible candidates to represent the people.

MDP is the party that brought democracy to the Maldives. Its members as well as leaders paid a heavy price to free our nation from the claws of a murderous regime. The people of the Maldives elected MDP with a healthy majority because they wanted and aspired for change.

MDP needs time and support of the people to deliver its promises and the only way they can do it is by having a majority in the next parliament. The people of the Maldives can show their support for the MDP government by electing their members in the coming parliamentary elections in May.

It really is up to the people now. Don’t sell your votes but caste it with a sense of belonging and a sense of responsibility. Vote for the very people who brought democracy, freedom and justice to our nation.

Don't vote for former dictators and cronies. Also, don't vote for those who stole from the poor to form a party claiming to eliminate poverty and don't vote for bossy opportunists.

DRP is not backing its own candidates now. I hear that Abdulla Hameed's 'boy' Red Wave Saleem is now sending death threats to his opponents in Baa Atoll, including the DRP endorsed candidate.
It appears that Hamdhoon Hameed is now carrying the flag of his father and Maumoon is still not sure whether he could trust anyone else but his own brother and family.

Yes, we need an MDP led parliament now, to make sure that our vision takes shape in our country.
No one should put the bastards of the previous regine back in the parliament.
Remember one this, you are free now to vote for whomever you like and there will not be any torture if you don't.
Don't vote for the slaves of the ousted dictator...
let Golhaa be history!

I will vote for MDP candidate. I think we should all vote for them. They are simple people like us, who care about us. President Nasheed did not want to live like Maumoon, he chose simple lifestyle over the grand palace and behaves like a normal person, I like that. I think this government has a lot to offer us but to help them legislate things, we need their MPs in the parliament.
Dr. Shaheed is a hypocrite to say stuff against MDP. President is clever enough to stay quiet about the case. If I were him, I would have sacked Kuday longtime back.

Anyone who votes for DRP is a donkey

Sappe how much are you paid to lick Nasheed's ass.We all voted for anni for better job than he is doing. Listen to people and uphold the rule of law. And he has already failed to live ot these aspirations. Noe he is going mentle to win parliamenry elcetion for MDP and he has forgortten that he has a mandate to the people.

If Gayoom cannot keep his mouth shut, we know how to do it. If Anni will bend the laws to protect Gayoom and the old regime, as parent of the victims, what does he expect from us. Forget and forget eh? I want to see Isthafaa Ibrahim Maniku, Anbaree and Adam Zahir in the docks.

Anni is going to be the next dictator after Gayyoom. If he wins the parliament majority he will be able to appoint the judges at the courts including the Supreme Court. Where would our democracy stand then? One thing for sure is that no president of Maldives wants democracy.
It was funny when Anni handed the 10 years carbon free project to Sappe who is drunk all the time.
Well we have seen Anni trying to make a statement at the world arena before when he wanted to buy land from another country to move Maldivian people. We were the laughing stock at that time and now with the Carbon project we have broke that record now.

i think parliment majority must NOT go to the ruling party MDP. While MDP ruling the government if MDP gets the parliment majority, then parliment will be as it was used to be like a RUBBER STAMP. I'm not arguing that the majority should go to DRP, the main opposition. But it could be any party or parties. My vote definitely a non MDP candidate. Think Nation.!

carbon Sappaey carbon sappey. You are afraid to looose the majority of the parliment simply because you see the next parliment may overthrow the government. Remember just like 30 years old regime was overthrown it is very likely all oppositions will unite and push Nasheed and MDP back to the street.. Or else wake up and instead targeting individuals unite people and show us HEYOVERIKAN....

Thirty long years would seemingly suffice for one person to rule, democratically or otherwise. It is a great honour to step down with dignity, however, to be ousted carries its own bitter tastes.
Maumoon has left behind him, a thirty year long term that no other Maldivian would pldege to recur in the future by one leader.
Voting is a civil right and human right. The voting right must rest with every person who is eligible to vote.
No person's vote may be influenced by the power of wealth or politically motivated gestures. Let each Maldivian eligible cast their vote to whom they so wish accordingly free from any coercion or force. 'Let the people decide.'

It is far better to be hungry through choice, than to be hungry because some stranger you did not choose, decides to make you hungry. The people of the Maldives will have to struggle for the first few years of democracy. We should elect representatives not for any special expertise they may possess but because we can trust them to do a conscientious job in defending constituents interests, in scrutinizing the work and the proposals of the government and in promoting programmes on which they have been elected? Only those few with a strong interest in public affairs and a readiness to work for unsocial hours will last. So, prove you’re intelligent reasonably, conscientious, organized, communicative and expressive person, you can prove to some extent you are capable of doing the job on the TV when time is given, doesn't matter what ever walk of life you may come from.
PLEASE! Think about the next generation before you vote and who would support for "A retirement age for elderly politicians to be fixed to minimize coruption, by the parliament which is a must, if you support the cause, to give room for the younger generation of politicians to govern our country"

Salaam Alaikum ww

If we really want to live in this country we must not allow any of the parties to get an absolute majority. All should be equally represented and that will do good to our nation. For instance if DRP gets the majority they will create problems to MDP. If MDP gets the majority they will rule as it is their own property (as we have seen in the last regime). Humans are animals so we should not trust them. What they say and what they act upon is totally different. So please do not give any party the majority to make it more chaotic. See what happened when George Bush got the majority in senate; he made sure that the world is in the brink of a great depression. And when he lost the majority he got down to where he should be and tried to correct the mistakes he had done. So please don't give the ruling party, especially, the majority. We will see ourselves in a deeper shit...

Please dont vote for any party ticket holder....

At the Westminster launch businessman Sir Paul, a former director general of Conservative Central Office, said:

....the party system had "turned the government and the political system into the domain of a very small number of people. Arrogance has developed...

"Most MPs are now in Parliament for their own selfish career rather than scrutinising what government proposes."

Asked whether independents could win more seats using this system, Sir Paul, who has given £50,000 to set up the campaign, said: "We believe we can... We believe it will release the same energy as was released by Barack Obama in the US.

"People now do not have the allegiance to political parties that they used to have.

"They are better educated and have allegiances that are much more fragmented. We believe we can cut out the middle man and give people direct access to the candidates and Parliament."

Good job my ass, the main aim of anni is to stay in power, look at the criminal activities hes engaged to win a parlimentary majority, electing rashu and atoll councils to fix votes, using goverment facilities transport, housing for candidates while on campaign. He has done a bad job for the ;ast 5 months, in 5 years it will be worse

"The people of the Maldives elected MDP with a healthy majority because they wanted and aspired for change. "
