Male' - 21:00 - Mohamed Nasheed, of the Maldivian Democratic Party Alliance has been formally declared as the winner of the 2nd round of the Presidential Election held on 28th October 2008.
The final official results were announced by the Election Commission as Mohamed Nasheed getting 97,222 (54.21%) and Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom getting 82,121 (45.79%). The total number of cancelled or void votes was 1,861. The total number of eligible voters is 209,294. The total turnout therefore works out as 86.5%.
The official results were announced in an official press conference by the Election Commission members.
The head of the Election Commission, Mr. Mohamed Ibrahim thanked all those who helped them with the election and specifically thanked the people of Maldives for their patience and the peaceful manner in which they conducted themselves during both rounds of the election.

Thank you all the members of EC for the patience and hard work. Also, I congratulate the winning candidate Mohamed Nasheed and his party wholeheartedly.
First thing I would like to see after the presidential oath is sacking off the following tyrants from power.
1- Fathin Hameed aka. Ingili Fathuma
2- Aazima Shakoor aka. Hadigilla
3- Athif Shakoor ( the one who was so confident of winning this election and abused the power)
4- Most of the Atoll chiefs
5- Abdulla Shahid and all Gayooms cabinet members including Kutti Nasheed.
6- All the board members of STELO, MIFCO, MTCC.
7- All the senior Ministers,
8- All DRP thugs who were unfairly appointed to high ranked Government posts.
9- All DRP thugs in STELCO, MIFCO MTCC and STO who abused power and used public resources to buy votes.
Finally, I would also like to see a fair trial on Gayoom and his advocates infront of the people who have been abused, insulted and neglected all these years.
I personally thank you Mr.Gayyoom for smooth transition of the Government same time Congratulate Mr. Nasheed for his victory. Not to forget this is a collective effort of so many Maldivians and I hope that you will uphold the promises. We really hope that you will bring full democracy to this country. One more thing ensure that you bring justice to the wrong doers.

I think Anni is going to have a hard time as the expectations of Maldivians for him are pretty high. They want him to wave a magic wand and fix everything.
I wish him the best and am in support of a change. But I have a feeling that the novelty of having a new president will wear off pretty soon and that should there be an election in 2.5 years, we might actually see Maumoon running again.
That poor old bastard has trouble letting go and I have a feeling we haven't seen the last of him.

In my opinion, Maumoon dont deserve anything more than a pension (living allowance). Some people think that he should be given a house to live,a car etc.. He simply doesnt deserve.
He said, he has been an ordinary Maldivian; so he should live like an ordinary Maldivian. Deeds are better than just talk. Set an example to the Maldivians during the rest of his time in life and earn some respect. Doesn't this guy learn something?
What Anni must do....first.
Vacate Theemuge and Aarah and let the public have a good look at the extravagance of last 30 years. The places must be opened for the public for 30 days. Kids must be taken from schools to go and see the palace and the teachers must be asked to ask the kids to write about their experiences. These stories must be published in local newspapers.
Many are surprised why Gayoom accepted defeat so graciously. To be honest, it was the biggest shock of his life. DRP had arrange lorries to congratualate and made arrangements to arrest 900 people and have purchased food and other basic stuff to keep them in Dhoonidhoo, Thilafushi and Maafushi. Please don't get carried away, Gayoom will strike back if we are too nice to him. He has taken more than enough money over the years and have houses in Malaysia in the name Ilyas, Sobir and Adam Hassan.
i would also like to see that all the higher level staff in the governement who helped Maumoon rule this country with iron fist are replaced with people who deserve the posts. But Maumoon definitely took the 30 years in power to corrupt a lot of staff who are working in the governement.
Anni can forgive Maumoon for what he did to him. And quite honestly speaking Anni has shown a magnificent character in himself after he won. But you cant forget 30 years of injustice, 30 years of abuse of power, 30 years of corruption, 30 years of fraud. Some people need to answer a lot of questions. And as for Maumoon, you cant simply use your sympathy card to make people forget what you have done. It is necessary for this country to set an example of equality in justice system. If maumoon can commit crimes at the highest level possible and be forgiven by the authorities, and a commoner commit the lowest crime and be punished, it would not be the "Anneh Dhivehiraajje" we maldivians foresee. The day Maldivian justice system stop recognizing faces, Maldives will take its course to a greater destiny.

Anni and the new regime faces a tough task. Its like doing neurosurgery on a seriously brain damaged person. The country has been looted for 30 years by Gayyoom and countless years before that by Nasir and the other bastard dictators that have gone by.
To fix all of this in 5 years or even 10 is a nigh impossible task. The only thing Anni can do is to provide a solid framework for future generations, such that the likes of dictator Gayyoom never have a chance in our society.

I have heard that Anni will cut a lot of public expenditure in order to bring down the huge deficit hanging over the budget. You may do what ever you want with lots of care and brilliant knowledge. Think twice before you make any decision on any major budget cuts. Some of your close aids say that you will shut down some of the state departments and service units. And if that is true that means a lot of civil servants will loose their jobs. This will cause a lot of consequences to your government. Many of whom directly and indirectly affected from this may go on street to oust you ultimately the opposition DRP taking advantage of this. We elected you with a lot of hope. We don’t want to see loosing our exiting jobs. In fact we want to see more job opportunities so that our children may at least do some thing more responsible than ending their life long career in Drugs.

if you want real change for this country do not bring the old guards back especially Dr. Shaugy. He is not a sincere person. Dr. Musthafa Luthfi is quite a Philosiphical person. He will be good to lead the university.

Maldivians are not fools. we know what to expect from anyone. We are not small children.
Mr.Nasheed is not going to run a small company of his own. He is been eleceted as the leader by the people and the people will let him and will support him run the country.
We do not expect him to bring the cat out of the bag and show us magic. We want to him to do things in a steady manner and in a way that will benefit all the Maldivians on the long run.
For those selfish and people with low or no slef-esteem, I have a message for you.
Mr.Nasheed will bring in all the intelectuals and educated people to his team and will teach GAYOOM and his cronies how a country is run for the people.
This is not another Egypt. This is Maldives.

I agree with John. The euphoria of having "deposed the dictator" is more or less over and done with. The only high note to look forward to is the 11th of November. This is the best thing ever for our country, but...like someone else also commented....the damn dictator and his cronies are still trying everything they can to give us a hard time.....i think we will have to get rid of the whole DRP bunch,once and for all.....after all the purpose of DRP was, and probably is...to support the dictator's authoritarian government,the social injustice..etc etc...in other words against democracy,against the common people.
The long lasted dictatorship of Uz.Gayyoom declined like the fall of many dynasties in the world. We firmly beleive President-elect Mr. Nasheed wil be da corner stone in the next 5 years politics in da country. If you are going to offer Mulee Aage for Gayoom to stay in for the rest of his life. Its like as if you are unable to get rid of him even after his 30 years of dictatorship. He will use all the power whithin his capacity to disrupt Mr.Nasheed's government. As of now DRP members feel that Gayoom will be still ruling this country even after 11th Nov.2008.
TV Maldives brings old videos and TVM staff need to be educated and we should teach them to accept truth.

Congratulations to the coalition n Anni. though everything is smooth to our eyes at the moment its not gonna b so in the long run. the new government is gonna face a hard time specially to address their manifesto. maldives people who have the potential n are competent. we want to see them in ur cabinet. though u have some hiddden agendas with the alliance people we hope u make wise decisions in appointing people to various posts. u may have agreed to give a certain nmbr of ministries to all the parties in the alliance but wud that work. be loyal to the maldivians n wen makin the decisions. we do not want musthafa luthfy to be our education minister, as we hear both higher education n education wud b one ministry. mustafa is an educated man with a phd. but he is an incompetent man to run the education ministry. there r phd holders n yet remain educated idiots. he is one among them. n the current permanent secretary of the ministry aamaal is one of his uncles or a very close relative. she too is an educated lady but an idiot like mustafa. there are a lot of changes to be brought to the filed of education. so we do not want it to b worse than now. definitely its gonna get worse under mustafa's administration. so anni if u had made the decision change it now. there is a lot of inbalance in the education system across the country n we want somebody who cud address these issues. n the policy that every student shud complete grade 10 shud b changed. vocational education shud b introduced n students who are not interested in studying shud b given the chance to develop their skills n talents. the fact that all the students cannot do o'level n all the students cannot complete grade 10 shud b taken into consideration. n incompetent school heads shud b replaced. heads who try to convince students, parents, teachers, other staff, island chiefs, atoll chiefs, citiizens shud b replaced immediately. by tryin to do so they r failures as we believe.
We are talking here as if Gayoom was working without a salary that end of the day poor Gayoom could not save even a penny. When he had gave millions as loan to his favourites, why didn' he set aside some money for him to build a house.
I feel that he had no intention of living among Maldivians. Maldives is his playground and he played foot ball here and today since the game is over he will go to somewhere else and live there for the rest of his life.

I hear that he is not going to leave Theemuge and if that is the case Mr.Nasheed will have to cut off electricity and water supplies to Theemuge. with all this also he may not leave and he will ask his son-in-law to get some Bangalhis to fetch water for him from Bandaara Miskiy.
Gayoom must release all political prisoners and others convicted on petty flimsy charges due to their political activities. Adam Zahir and Abdulla Riyaaz must be relieved immediately. These two crooks have jailed so many innocent people,and tortured them. Anni should avoid transferring people to other jobs. We have to cut down on this top heavy "family first" government.
We should limit our ministries to 12 not 13 or 14. We have to stop finding jobs for "family and friends)instead appoint capable people to the jobs. To work in a coalition, ministries must be assigned to parties with deputies selected from other parties. The best way to have a check and balance. We cannot afford to give even a second job to the same person. Anni's priority is to send all these educated people to the islands as atoll chiefs instead each vying for a ministry. Anni must prioritize his ideals and dreams but must make sure we don't make the same mistakes as Gayoom again.
I agree with Anni. He must be patient until he gets the keys to the kingdom. But let him beaware that we will derail his administration if he goes back on his word to please Gayoom and his coalition some of whom like Gasim is very sympathetic to his bosses. Unless Anni is willing to replace the Junta led by Gayoom, the military and police will take over in the name of Yameen and or Ilyas and arrest Anni again. Let us be very clear that we won't be able to bring any change into this country unless we have a sincere team.
optimistic about the new cabinet, at least the gangsters are not there. SO happy to hear KOLIGE' clan supported the change, the stress of my most devious suspicions of Yamin mustering their support are put to rest, so sorry to be alarmist but you never know what help Yamin might try to gain from people abroad! At this early stage and after what Maldives have been through, until the reforms are solidified it is better to be suspicious than careless and lulled into a false sense of security!
Gayoom, sleep on a tatty old matress in a concrete room the size of a cupboard, like the rest of us! And when you and Nasreena has slept on that bed, Yamin and his wife can sleep on it. Take turns, from evening to midnight you take the bed, from midnight to morning Yamin and Whatever can have the mattress! Even then Maumoon and Nasreena you're doing well because you don't have starving babies to feed!
We can read Anni's sincerity when we see his cabinet line up. It is utmost he bring educated, capable people not party cadres from various coalition partners. We have to show to Gayoom and his supporters that we mean real change. Any cabinet without Sappe ( who is the real father of democracy) is not acceptable to many Maldivians.
