In all the euphoria with the Maldives winning the SAFF Championships, the official media appears to deliberately ignore the role of the mastermind whose strategy and tactics won the elusive trophy for us Maldivians - the coach Joseph Jankech. We have had experienced coaches in the past. We have had outstanding players in the past. But we have never received the coveted prize. It is none other than, Joseph Jankech, who shaped our team into a winning outfit. He almost did it once before in 2003. And now he has done it for us in 2008.
Jospeh Jankech deserves more credit and praise than the official media is willing to accord him. However, it appears to be a deliberate ploy by the government to push him into the background and ignore his role in achieving the dreams of every Maldivian.
Many football fans are concerned that not enough attention is given to the role of Joseph Jankech in winning the SAFF Championships. Shifan, a hardcore football supporter remarked, “Official media seems to conveniently forget that it this Slovakian man who was the architect in getting us where we are today. I say that Joseph Jankech should be made an honorary citizen of the Maldives”.
After the famous victory against Sri Lanka in the semi finals, the coach said in an interview to Maldivesoccer.net http://maldivesoccer.net/v4/?page=story&id=2006 said “As a coach I want to win all the matches under my guidance and we are going to the finals to win the cup’. He also said “I want to thank all the fans for the support. The team needs the continuous support we have been getting throughout the competition. We would not disappoint the fans and Insha Allah’ we would bring the cup back home”.
The Slovakian mastermind took Maldives football to new heights and made it a threat to the countries in the region. After a brief absence, he came back to shape Maldives national team once against and has delivered the country’s first ever football trophy in the region. Yankez's credentials include the unforgettable run in 2003 SAFF Championship held in Dhaka. The islanders were stopped by the host in a breath taking penalty shoot out after the final match ended in a 1 all draw.

This is very true, I agree with u! This is the biggest achievement in our football history and coach is behind the game. He is who trained the players day and night. We can see Joseph's techniques in the second half of the final match. The play was totally changed and the control was mostly on Maldives team.... But after winning the cup and returning to the country, even from TVM they didnt ask for a word from the Coach, They didnt ask his thoughts and feelings... even in the songs made for the day, they didnt mention his name in it... he was totally ignored... this is really sad and a shame for us that the media didn't appreciate what he did for our coutry :(

Am glad some one recognised the coach's work. The Maldivians completely ignmored his part in the winning. Infact it was his hard work. I also was sad to see that past football players were not invited to the ceremonies or they were never mentioned, maldives did produce international standard players in the past Kuda Moosa, Saeed Ali , Laabe, Latchey etc. many more, why were they ignored too

I think it is duty for him to point out to his readers including Golhabo that this success has nothing to do with Golha, but to the players and the coach. We have many Maldivians around the world who had achieved success in various fields, many who studied on their own without a penny from Golhabo. The players wanted to celebrate their victory over India , then and there on the ground with the fan who travel all the way to support their team. But galhaaboa ordered them to come up to the podium and hand over the cup to Golhaa boa. All the players are so mad about it cause they could not make their fans touch the cup.

This is definitely the biggest achievement in the foot ball history of the Madlives, and yes thanx for the coach but apart from that it was the maldivian supporters who must b praised a lot. I have seen a lot of Maldivians in SriLanka doing all that they could do to support their team and the fact is Qayyoom was not the person behind all the success. I am sad that Maldivian football team forgot for sometime that the success behind their victory was their own people not Qayyoom. 7000 Maldivians in sugathadhasa stadium was so well prepared to cheer their team on their own cost while the Maldivian President was enjoying all with the state benefits. I got shocked when the team ran straight to Qayyoom with the cup? Y people don't realize that the poor Maldivians have done so much for their team?
